Should I cover teak furniture during winter?

When you’re investing in teak garden furniture, you want to ensure you’re doing everything you can to keep it in top condition. Luckily, teak is one of the most durable woods and requires very little maintenance. Your teak furniture can be left outside all year round without being susceptible to damage, however, if you want to keep your teak looking brand new - it’s worth purchasing a cover.

Here are just some of the benefits of covering your teak during the winter months!

It will help prevent ageing

As your teak ages, it will naturally begin to change colour, going from a rich, warm brown to a silvery grey colour that’s equally as beautiful. For some, this natural ageing process is just another benefit of choosing this exceptional wood, however, to keep yours looking golden brown a cover is a great option.

Remember! It’s not just the winter months that can accelerate the ageing process, exposure to direct sunlight can also cause the wood to fade. We recommend placing your furniture under a cover or in a shaded spot during hot weather.

It will prevent excess moisture from damaging the wood

Teak is a very porous wood and will easily absorb moisture. Although this wood is incredibly durable and hardwearing, excess moisture can eventually cause damage. Many people choose teak garden furniture because it doesn’t warp or bow when left outside during normal weather conditions, however extreme rainstorms or snow could lead to the teak being damaged. As well as causing the teak itself to expand, the natural oils within the wood can attract mould and mildew. If you do notice black mould on your teak furniture, we advise following our guide to cleaning teak outdoor furniture

How to protect your teak furniture from the elements

Although high-quality, grade-A teak is designed to be left outside all year round, there are some easy-to-follow tips to keep yours looking its best.

  • Move furniture indoors or into a garage/shed during heavy rainfall or snow.
  • If you can’t move it indoors, cover it with a waterproof tarp.
  • Do not position your teak near any water sources such as gutters
  • Remove any cushions or seat pads that can absorb water when not in use

What type of cover is best for teak furniture?

There are plenty of teak garden furniture covers available, however, the most popular material to use is tarp. As well as being waterproof, it also provides ample protection from direct sunlight. We do recommend ensuring that the cover you choose is breathable, to help prevent any moisture from building up underneath the cover.

A waterproof tarp cover is also incredibly durable, giving your furniture an added layer of protection for years to come. If you live in a cold climate, we highly recommend investing in a cover during the winter months.
