How to clean teak garden furniture

One of the benefits of choosing teak garden furniture is that it’s very easy to take care of. This durable hardwood is a great choice for those looking for stylish furniture without maintenance, however, if you are looking to give your furniture a spruce up, we have some top teak tips!

How often should I clean teak garden furniture?

We recommend cleaning your teak outdoor furniture once a year. If you tend to use yours more in the summer, ideally you would clean yours in the spring in order to get it ready for entertaining.

Cleaning your teak furniture

When you’re ready to give your teak a clean, we recommend choosing a clear day with a light breeze to help dry your furniture quickly. There are specialist teak cleaners available, however, in our experience, the best way to clean teak is by scrubbing it with a solution of soapy water and a splash of white vinegar.

Once you have scrubbed your furniture with the solution, use a hose to rinse and remove any stubborn deposits of dirt or bird droppings. If the hose doesn’t shift these build-ups, you can lightly sand the area in the direction of the grain. This may leave a lighter patch on the wood but it will gradually even out to match the rest of the teak.

Do not use a pressure washer on your teak furniture. The power from the jet can loosen the joints and strip away the natural oils that protect the wood.

Once the teak is clean and dry, you can then apply a teak wood treatment. Find out more about treating your teak in our Caring for Your Teak guide.

How to deal with food and drill spills on teak furniture?

When you’re hosting a BBQ or dinner party, chances are your furniture will at some point become stained by food or drink. Teak is a naturally absorbent wood, so you want to act quickly, especially if the culprit is wine, an oil-based salad dressing or grease. Using kitchen towel, dab the area clean to remove as much of the spillage as possible. Once the area is dry, lightly sand the area to remove any residue.

How to remove mould from teak garden furniture?

Black mould can cause teak furniture to look worn and dirty, so it’s important to deal with mould as soon as you spot it. We recommend creating a cleaning solution with soapy water and a small splash of bleach. Clean the teak thoroughly with this mixture and use a scrubbing brush on the mould itself. Rise the teak carefully with clean water afterwards, ensuring all traces of the bleach mixture have been removed.
