Is Teak Furniture Eco-Friendly?

Over the last decade, one of the biggest considerations when it comes to buying garden furniture is whether the materials are eco-friendly. With more people than ever concerned about their carbon footprint, choosing sustainable wood has never been more important. At Teak Finesse, we want all of our customers to have peace of mind when buying any of our teak outdoor furniture. We’ve made it our mission to provide only the best materials that are sustainable and responsibly sourced, let’s take a closer look at how we do it!

Where does teak come from?

All of the teak available on Teak Finesse comes from sustainable plantations on the island of Java. All of these plantations are owned and managed by the government which has put in place strict guidelines as to what trees can be felled each year. This takes into account the age of the tree, the size of the tree and how many trees have already been felled that year. By sticking to these guidelines, the government are able to put in place an extensive and effective replanting program.

How do I know my teak is legally sourced?

The legality of teak is managed by Indonesia’s sustainable plantation teak wood licensing system, otherwise known as SVLK certification. Only teak that fully complies with the regulations set out by the government can achieve this certification and your teak provider should clearly state whether they have it or not. Any teak sold within European markets without SVLK has been illegally harvested.

Is teak sustainable?

Yes, our teak does not come from natural forest, it is sourced from regulated plantations that provide a renewable resource. Teak is not an endangered species and thanks to the hard work of the Indonesian government, they are able to regulate a sustainable replanting system. Any trees that are used for commercial purposes are harvested for that purpose.

Why is sustainability important at Teak Finesse?

Our mission as a company is to provide teak garden furniture that is environmentally friendly, and we’re proud that all of our teak is responsibly sourced. Illegal logging is still a huge global issue, so we want to ensure all of our customers that our teak is harvested in accordance with government guidelines.

As well as showing our appreciation of the environment, there are also plenty of eco-friendly benefits to using teak! The natural oils in the wood made it naturally resistant to pests, so teak plantations do not need to use any chemicals or pesticides to help the trees grow. Any leftovers from our teak furniture production methods can also be recycled, plus the durability of teak ensures that you won’t have to replace your furniture after a couple of years!

As a company, we are wholly committed to our values of sustainability, equal opportunity and corporate social responsibility. We are incredibly proud to supply only SVLK-certified teak garden furniture, which allows our customers to shop in confidence all over the world.
